Moreton Science Faculty is a warm, friendly and welcoming department that works hard to continue to raise standards. Our main aim is to provide the best possible science education for all students, by providing quality where it counts: in the classroom!
We recognise our obligation to make science relevant to the needs and interests of the students, and we constantly strive to provide an invigorating experience for all students, irrespective of differences in ability, gender, and cultural background.
Having established a positive working relationship with training providers, students have gone onto gain successful employment at other establishments. Primary schools are also weekly visitors to the Science labs where we strive to support and develop the science experience at KS2.
Moreton science faculty consists of 5 fully equipped laboratories which offer a practical, safe and exciting environment for learning experiences to take place. A suite of laptops are available to students to further independent study and fulfil any ICT requirements.
Aims
At Moreton, the Science faculty offers a broad and balanced science education for all, providing relevant and challenging Science courses alongside promoting and developing the associated elements of cross-curricular programmes of study. This is achieved through the progression and continuity of teachers and students alike.
The Science faculty offers unique and exciting opportunities which aims to;
- Encourage an interest and enjoyment in science and in the methods of enquiry.
- Develop the knowledge, understanding and skills appropriate to the study of science.
- Develop in students an understanding of the implications of science upon themselves and society.
- Enhance learning and performance for all.
- Encourage students to take initiative and responsibility for their own development and safety.
Key Stage 3
Year 7 and 8 students follow schemes of work developed to match QCA curriculum incorporating themes from key ideas of Cells, Interdependence, Energy, Forces and Particles.
A range of teaching strategies are used across the topics to encourage independent learning through the use of Assessment for Learning strategies including peer and self assessment, and through the continued use of Personal Learning and Thinking Skills. Students are assessed on their subject knowledge as well as their skills levels and are awarded levels in line with National Curriculum guidance.
Key Stage 4
Over the past 5 years results have continued to increase with 55% of students achieving CC+ grades at GCSE Science in 2009. Since 2010 we have introduced a BTEC course with equivalence to CC+ grade at GCSE. This has resulted in our results rising to 92% pass rate for 2 good Sciences.
This is an excellent and admirable achievement for both students and staff.
All students at Key Stage 4 have the opportunity to choose from two different pathways:
- OCR 21st Century Science suite offers Core Science, Additional Science and Additional Applied Science to be taught from Year 9 through to Year 11. Students have the opportunity to achieve three GCSE grades over their KS4 career.
- BTEC Level 2 First Certificate and Diploma in Applied Science offers students the pportunity to gain a pass, merit or distinction through continual portfolio work, leading to the equivalent of 2 (certificate) or 4 (diploma) GCSEs at grade C or above.
Key Stage 5
Certificate in Applied Science (Medical Sciences) offers students the opportunity to gain a pass, merit or distinction over their KS5 career, leading to the equivalent of an A2 grade E or above.
