English is taught by a team of lively, enthusiastic specialists.

Students throughout all Key Stages are encouraged and supported by outstanding teaching. As a result, students enjoy English lessons, which is reflected in their exam success.

At Key Stage 3, we have developed schemes of work that are relevant to the young people we teach using the English strategy and National Curriculum. Speaking and listening, reading and writing skills are developed through thematic units, including media, poetry, story-telling and Shakespeare.
Key Stage 4 is influenced by the requirements of the GCSE specifications. Students complete four pieces of written coursework:
  • A response to a Shakespeare Play
  • A narrative account exploring homelessness
  • A media task and
  • A response to a prose text ( currently, `Frankenstein`, `A Christmas Carol` and a selection of ghost stories are being studied).
In addition, students receive focused teaching when revising for their final GCSE exams.
Students are entered for English in Year 10 and English Literature in Year 11.

English Literature A’ Level aims to appeal to students who have a love of reading and would like to experience a wide variety of literature, including poetry, prose and drama.

AS focuses on literature of the First World War, with teaching leading to two pieces of written coursework and culminating in a two hour exam.

A2 is reliant upon students’ own wider reading, with emphasis on the theme of love through the ages. Students complete one piece of written coursework, comparing a Shakespeare play with two other texts of the individual student’s choice.
